As an entrepreneur, one of the main aspects of running your business is to market it. Part of marketing directly relates to your brand; which, in turn, determines your overall influence. Building an influence online is the easiest way to help improve your branding and networking amongst those within your market place.
Unfortunately, entrepreneurs often approach building an influence online completely wrong. Hours upon hours are invested to network with others only for the contacts to fall through. Likewise, time spent on building influence often is quickly destroyed when the entrepreneur pushes too aggressively with their marketing message.
So the question becomes: “Is it possible to build your influence online?” The following question will be answered through a series of elements which you should avoid; and ways you can correct them.
* Use social media but don’t be overly-promotional *
Social media is a very unique and easy way to begin building your influence online. The use of social platforms have given us the term “social proof” which is simply the act of showing your expertise and backing it by what others have to say and being transparent with your information.
Social media allows entrepreneurs to contact those that are within their target market, support them and build lasting relationships which can turn to customers. Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Foursquare are just a few in the tip of the social media mountain; use these to help build your influence but don’t try to promote yourself all the time – leave room to help others and let it be known.
* Create your web presence but not overbearing *
To build a lasting influence online, you’ll need either:
A. A website
B. A blog
Having your own landing page to market your business will help those that seek your products and service a place to find everything they need. Building a web presence takes time but with enough work and passion you’ll be able to create one which people will regularly reference and visit.
To add to your web presence, you should also share your expertise on other websites and blogs. Harking back to social proof, creating content for other websites will place you in front of different areas of your market so you may best share your expertise and build authority within your niche.
Avoid the temptation to be over-bearing with your web presence. Let it be known what you do but don’t go around causing trouble with others; although they are your competition, word gets around fast that you’re cut-throat. Play nice and you’ll come across to your market as someone that’s compassionate.
* Network with others but not just one-way *
Networking is a must in order to build your influence online. Despite all of your innovations, products, services, support and authority, you won’t be able to create an influence unless you dawn partnerships with other people of influence online.
Having a group of select networkers, you can help build your brand by joint-venturing with other entrepreneurs. These bonds help spread your marketing to other existing markets in exchange for your own participation. The more you’re able to network; the more you’re able to build influence.
With that being said, don’t abuse your networks. Don’t make it just about you without giving back to those that are helping you. Play it fair amongst those that you network with else you’ll burn your bridges and fail to build any kind of influence.
* Share your expertise without charging *
Finally, in order to build your expertise you have to share it with others but not just for pay, you’ll need to share it at no charge. The internet is built upon the preconceive notion that information is free; don’t go against the grain and charge for everything you do.
Be helpful within the community and market by giving away great tid-bits of information. When you give content away, you help others which create an effect where people later want to help you buy doing business.
If you follow each of these items correctly, you’ll successfully increase your influence online. Don’t make the mistake that countless other entrepreneurs have made; get out there and put forth the work, network with others, share your information and build that authority.
